Stopping Time

Last week I asked my students –“if you had the choice, would you rather have more money or more time?” Time was the unanimous answer. The question didn’t come out of the blue but it was a reality that had been gnawing away at me for some time. I’d like to say I’d pick money, you know live each day like it was your last, live it up... but honestly, I’d pick time.

Twilight Zone looked at this opportunity once in an episode entitled “A Kind of Stopwatch”.
I don’t remember the whole story, except some guy gets a stopwatch that can actually freeze time, everyone and everything stops, except for the holder of the watch... Imagine that, stopping time to get all your homework, or your housework done, to get to the place you’re going to without rushing. In this episode, the guy uses it to rob banks. Stops time, grabs the money and runs. During one robbery – the watch shatters. And the world is frozen in time, except for our guy – who now has all the money he ever wanted, but no one to spend time with.
“Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived.” Patrick Stewart in the film "Star Trek: Generations"
My next posting … what I would do if I could turn back time?

  1. I am one of the few that chose money. I think that we have the right amount of time on earth I just need more money so that I can spend more time with the ones that I love. If I didn't have to worry about money or making it, I could spend quality time with my family. Think of all of the wonderful things that you could do?

But that is just my opinon...

  2. The topic of stopping time tears away at me. I don't know if I could stop time. Of course it would be wonderful to slow down everything, especially in today's hectic world, but I would feel so alone. No one would share this with me.

I am not someone who enjoys being alone. In fact, I hate it. I'm so used to always having others around, I would be depressed and miserable. Stopping time would be convenient, but not a happy experience. I would rather feel rushed and stressed while still enjoying those around me and cherishing the moments I spend with them.

  3. The thought of more time is so much more appealing, especially with school being so hectic right now. I would spend everything I have just for one extra day on the weekend-- even if it was to do homework.

  4. That is so funny, I have definitely seen that episode. Obviously, time is something that everyone has thought about at some point in their life. As I have gotten older, like my parents always told me, time starts to go faster and faster.I have realized that living like I am going to die tomorrow just doesn't work for me. I am doing what I want to do and saying what I want to say but the fast lane just isn't for me.
Time is of the essense, just be happy and don't worry about the time.

  5. I definitely am a time is more than money person. I feel like time is so precious, I don't want to waste a second. There is always a way to make money, as long as I can live the lifestyle I want, money isn't an issue.

  6. I love the Star Trek quote! I think I would choose more time. But, I do love money. If I could stop time I would place a flower in everyones hand so when they came to, maybe they would be happy! That's the '60's hippie in me coming out.

  7. Did I have the opportunity to answer this question? Because honestly at 24, I have to go with money although I know when I am 40, I will say time.

I think about all the Strongbow and clothes I could buy with money and suddenly, the time issue goes back burner.

When I think about time, I think about the CBC show and that Erica character. I can't believe it took so long for that concept to arrive on television muchless the fact that Canadians had the opportunity to bite first.

Having more time to me is more about taking those freak lapses of judgment back rather than wanting more actual time. Money in our world can do so much more than time can. I know if I had more money, I would put it towards changing the world to make it better for people who still have time...and Strongbow!

  8. I would definitely choose money because in my mind it would allow you to have more time. You wouldn't need to be constantly on the go and working. You would have unlimited time to just relax and enjoy your surroundings.

  9. Great question, and I think it is unanswerable (is that a word), because like Shelby said, if we had more money, we would have more time; however, like your episode, if I froze time, I could take some extra money and have the extra time. If I had to pick between these two, I would pick extra money, because I don't like to mess with godly stuff like time. If I had more money it would allow me to live life free of stress, or less stress. I also think if you have more time, you will continually want even more time and when is enough?

  10. Time would undoubtedly be my preference. Money has never been something of enormous concern for me. The things I have enjoyed most in my life, are those that haven't required a great deal of money. Spending time just relaxing with my family, pitching a tent in the middle of nowhere, or hanging out with friends on the backyard patio, have been some of the moments that I continuously cherish. Those moments, do not require endless amounts of money. As long as I have the people I care about around me, I am more than happy.

  11. As a person who feels like she's wasted some time in her life, I'm definitely on the time side of this discussion.

To me, money will never be as important to me as time with loved ones, time to myself, and time to reminisce. I know this last one sounds weird, but I take a lot of pictures everywhere I go, and I like to look them over and reminisce about the "good ol' days."

  12. In the grand scheme of things you're not really stopping time. Time is all relative. Just because you stopped the time for everyone else your time would continue. In a technical sense I, a 22 year-old, could stop the world for 20 years and when I started it again I would be 42 years old and everyone else would be the same age as when I stopped the watch.
I'd rather have the money, I can deal with the fact I waste most of my time. The money would buy me something to do with the hours I was wasting.
